How to use Indigo for hair
For best results, indigo must be applied to hair that freshly washed. Indigo by itself generally will not dye hair very well and should be used following a henna treatment or mixed with the henna to achieve various shades of brown/auburn to black. How to prepare henna for gray hair, applying indigo to the hair by itself will result in grey hairs turning blue. After coloring your hair with henna and indigo, you may want to switch to a gentle shampoo or an herbal hair wash, as harsh shampoos may strip the color from your hair.

CAUTION: DO NOT BLEACH YOUR HAIR AFTER USING INDIGO ON IT, YOUR HAIR WILL TURN GREEN!

1. Step method for henna/indigo for auburn/brown hair

Mix henna powder in a bowl with water and a bit of acid, like lemon juice, vinegar or orange juice. Add enough liquid to make it the consistency of pudding. Cover the container with plastic wrap and let it set you see dye release. Once the henna has dye released, in a separate bowl, mix up the desired amount of indigo powder with warm water. Stir until the lumps are gone. Add the just mixed indigo to the henna paste and stir together until well mixed. Immediately apply to freshly washed hair. You may need to add more water as you are working with the paste, as it will thicken as it sits. Wrap head in plastic wrap, then place a shower cap over the top of that. Allow to sit on hair for a minimum of 2 hours. Rinse paste from hair. Do not shampoo for 24 to 48 hours, as the henna/indigo will need time to oxidize.

Special notes:

-If you have grey hair that is dye resistant, you may have to try the 2-step method.
-The amount of indigo that you add to the mix will depend upon the color that you are trying to achieve. For a darker brown/auburn, try a ratio of 1 part henna to 2 parts indigo.
Leave the paste on the hair for the following amount of time to achieve the desired colors:

Black - leave on for 45 minutes to 1 hour
Brown - leave on for 15 to 30 minutes, depending on how deep you want the brown to be.

Rinse the paste out. Do not shampoo for 24 to 48 hours, as the indigo will need time to oxidize.
